Our repeat study of 21st century glacier recession on Mt. Hood is published in the journal The Cryosphere! You can read the study as a PDF here or here on the website
Briefly, we show that glacier retreat in the 21st century is unprecedented in the recorded history of Mt. Hood glaciers. This retreat tracks rising summer temperatures that have now reached 1.7-1.8C warmer than the early 1900s.
When documenting glacier photos I think its very important to indicate the month or at least time of year the photo was taken. The pictures from 2003 look like Spring and the 2023 ones look much more like end of summer/fall. They're obviously retreating so theres no reason to not indicate the time of year the photos were taken. If they're both from fall then the changes seen are even more impactful.
