In 1896, the Mazama Mountaineering club found a glacier on Mt. McLoughlin that they named Sholes. This was the southernmost glacier in Oregon at that time. On a return trip in 1939, the glacier was gone, showing the degree of warming that occurred at the end of the Little Ice Age. We were up on McLoughlin on 17 July 2020 but could find no
evidence that this glacier ever existed - no moraines, no polished bedrock, etc. A ghost that we only know of because of one picture. A picture says more than a thousand words!
